President Murmu Presents Lalit Kala Akademi Awards to Artists at National Exhibition

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday presented the Lalit Kala Akademi awards to selected artists participating in the 65th National Exhibition of Art in New Delhi. She also felicitated the Grand Prize winners and recipients of Honourable Mentions at the 3rd Print Biennale India 2026.

Addressing the ceremony on October 21, the President said the event celebrated India’s artistic heritage, cultural diversity and contemporary creativity, reflecting the country’s rich artistic traditions and evolving forms of expression.

Emphasising the wider significance of art, Murmu said it extended beyond paintings, sculptures and other creative mediums. Art reflects culture, preserves memories, captures present-day experiences and expresses aspirations for the future. It also helps society understand its times from fresh perspectives, she said.

The President stressed the need to equip traditional artists, particularly those in remote areas, with training in new technologies and contemporary artistic techniques. Such support would help them showcase their skills and compete on broader platforms.

She also highlighted the importance of financial assistance, wider market access and stronger connections with art collectors for artists. Murmu welcomed efforts by the Lalit Kala Akademi and the Ministry of Culture to encourage the sale of artworks.

Calling for art to reach beyond galleries, the President urged stakeholders to take it to schools, universities, public spaces and wider sections of society. She called for ample opportunities for young and emerging artists to develop their talent, explore new mediums and expand their creative potential.
