Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the proposed extension of the Northern bullet train corridor to Guwahati, saying it could enable travel between Guwahati and Delhi in less than eight hours.
In a post on X, Sarma thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving the extension into the Northeast. He said the corridor was initially planned to terminate at Siliguri.
Sarma said he had submitted a written request and met Vaishnaw in July to press for extending the project to Guwahati. The railway minister subsequently approved the proposal, he said.

Describing the decision as a significant development for the Northeast, Sarma said faster and affordable connectivity with Delhi and two state capitals would create opportunities for businesses, investment and employment.
He added that Assam was preparing for a new phase of high-tech industrial growth and that improved rail connectivity could support the state’s economic ambitions.
The chief minister said a bullet train connection to Assam had once appeared beyond reach but was now becoming a reality. He ended his post with the slogan, “Isiliye, Modi kahin nahi jayega.”
Sarma’s remarks came in response to the proposed expansion of the high-speed rail corridor into the Northeast.
